Folios 120-121. Copy of a letter from Mons, relating to de Schmettau to the Prince of Waldeck, with remarks [by the Prince ?] on the contents of the letter, dated at the Hague. The writer deals with the question of a new treaty with Spain and its duration; he discusses the various measures which could be concerted between the King and the Elector, and also operations against the enemy. He reports that the Elector has expressed that, regarding operations against the enemy, he will always consider first the reason for war and the common good, such that if at the start of the next campaign further measures are required he would not refuse to help as judged necessary. The Elector states that if his five battalions of soldiers are kept in Liege for the defence of that town, during the winter, he considers that the Bishop should contribute to their maintenance; Waldeck agrees if one looks at the defence of Liege as being in the interests of the Bishop, but argues that one needs to consider the public good, the security of the Elector's land and strategy of war. The writer raises the issue of provisions for the quarters in Limburg, where the Marquis of Gastanaga is refusing to provide what he did the previous year, and asks for the Prince of Waldeck's assistance in resolving this matter.
