Description

List, labelled 'Export of "Slaves" 1778'. This provides a list of named ships carrying enslaved people, arriving at and departing from Cape Coast Castle between January and September 1778. Ships arriving include the following ships, which are bound for Angola: the sloop, Senhouse, from Barbados, under Captain Bellew; the ship, St Germaine, from London, under Captain Chalmers; the ship, Betsy, from Liverpool, under Captain Fresher; the ship, Tartan, from Liverpool, under Captain Houghton; the sloop, Dorcas, from Antigua, under Captain Lawson; the sloop, Constantine, from Bristol, under Captain Robe; the sloop, Hero, from London, under Captain Martin; the sloop, Peter, from London, under Captain Cleland; the sloop, Simond, from London, under Captain Mackintosh; the sloop, Weazle, from London, under Captain Robinson. The following ships are bound for Benin: the sneau, Breton, from Bristol, under Captain Hardcastle. The ships which are departing from Cape Coast and Annamaboe include all of these, and also, the Unity, under Captain Hiblethwaite. Onward destinations include Jamaica, Liverpool. Antigua, Grenada, Benin, and Tobago. The list provides the numbers of enslaved people transported by each departing ship, adding up to a total of 3337.
