A census of production provided information on economic data needed for the compilation of national accounts. Questionnaires were distributed to business asking for information on various aspects of work; sometimes these were voluntary; sometimes they were required by law. These inquiries formed an essential source of data that underpinned national accounts. They were used to re-base the Index of Production and producer price indices.
