The role of Chief Inspector of the UK Border Agency was created by section 48 of the UK Borders Act 2007 to provide an independent, external assessment of the Agency, both in the UK and abroad. The Chief Inspector is independent of both the Agency and the Home Office, and reports directly to the Home Secretary.
In 2012 the name of the role was changed to the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration.
