Description

Captured ship: Elizabeth and Sarah of Plymouth (prize master Cornelis Engelsen, otherwise Cornelius English).

History: an English merchant ship (40 tons, formerly the Dutch merchant ship St Katherine of Amsterdam, condemned about 9 months before and bought at Plymouth), now bound from Milford Haven, Wales, laden with culme and stone coke to process lime at Plymouth castle; taken about 18/28 February 1672/1673 off the Lizard by the Dutch privateer Dragon of Flushing (John van Eder commanding) and sent in for Flushing but was forced by bad weather and leaks (so bad that the prize commander had to throw about 12 tons of the cargo overboard to keep the ship afloat) to go into Brixham, Torbay, about 20 February/2 March 1672/1673 where the prize crew surrendered the ship to her own company (previously prisoners), who moored the ship. She was then seized by HMS Morning Star (Francis Reade commanding), and immediately afterwards sank in the harbour at Brixham but was later salvaged.
