Description

Captured ship: Charity of London (master James Winsor).

Capture history: a Dutch or English merchant ship (200 tons, formerly an English ship taken by the Dutch in the previous war, the master received the ship at Amsterdam from James Therry about 16 months before), now bound from Virginia and Maryland to England or Amsterdam, laden with tobacco; seized in early July 1672 at Falmouth.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1- 3:-

  • [CP 1]: examination of Winser, taken at Falmouth, 15 July 1672; mentions that several letters from Virginia were perused by the deputy Vice-Admiral of the south coast of Cornwall, who gave them back to the master, to be delivered by the post;
  • [CP 2 -CP 3]: two lists of claims (CP 3 also mentions the company of the ship Industry).

Extra information: Calendar of State Papers Domestic 1672, pp358-359: case of Therry and Depyster. [SP 29/313 no 2]. Owner was William Depester, resident of London.
