The Appeals Service was launched on 3 April 2000. The Service arranges and hears appeals on decisions on:
Social Security; Child Suppor; Vaccine Damage; Tax Credit; and Compensation Recovery. The Appeals Service initially comprised two distinct bodies within a single organisation. The first was a tribunal non-departmental public body with responsibility for the judicial functioning of appeals tribunals. The second was an executive agency of the Department for Work and Pensions. At the head of the agency, with responsibility for the administration of appeals (delegated to him by the Secretary of State), is the Chief Executive.
In 2008 the Appeals Service became the Social Security and Child Support Appeals (SSCSA) Tribunal, part of the Tribunals Service, an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Justice.
