Folios 9-12. A letter from [Treasury Secretary] John Robinson to Sir Stanier Porten, concerning intelligence from Brest [France], gathered by Captain Joseph Benn [master of the 'Molly and Betty'] which was taken [on 26 December 1779] by the French privateer, the 'Black Prince'. Enclosing: Folio 10. Cha [Charles] Lutwidge [to Robinson], dated at W'haven [?Whitehaven, Cumberland]. Enclosing: Folio 11-12. Manuscript describing Captain Benn's escape, with crew members, from prison in Brest, and seizure of a French vessel, the 'St Jean Baptiste', Jean Charlier, master; and his return in it to England. The French crew captured: Pierre Besot, mate; Louis Grosim; Julian Paverot; and Remise le Roy; and a passenger Antonie Cantitot. Benn details the strength of naval and land force at Brest.
