Description

Captured ship: Two Crowns of Kristiansand (master Jan Jurensen or Jorrensen or Jorgensen).

History: a Danish (Norwegian) merchant ship (–25 lasts) bound from Kristiansand to Bordeaux, laden with deal boards, and rails; taken in January 1693/4 off Dover by the privateer Experiment (John Powell commanding), and brought into Dover.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 9:

  • [CP 1-CP 3]: interrogatories, four examinations;
  • [CP 4]: claim to the ship and cargo by the master;
  • [CP 5-CP 7]: two attestations sent in from Kristiansand, one with a translation;
  • [CP 8-CP 9]: abstracts and translations of the ship's papers, docket.

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 15.

  • SP 1-SP 2: ceritificates;
  • SP 3-SP 5: ship's pass, customs papers;
  • SP 6-SP 8: two brief notes or receipts, letter to Jan Jorgensen;
  • SP 9-SP 11: cargo list, two further letters to Jorgensen;
  • SP 12-SP 15: custom paper, cocket, accounts, certificate.

[Decision: ship and cargo condemned, 1 March 1694; appealed].
