Description

Captured ship: Providence of Fowey (master William Butler).

History: an English merchant ship (50 tons) bound from Virginia to Fowey or Plymouth, laden with tobacco; taken on 2/12 January 1690/1 off the Scilly Isles by a French privateer, retaken on 3/13 January 1690/1 HMS Pembroke (John Avery commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 4:

  • [CP 1]: two examinations;
  • [CP 2]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Fowey;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: commission of appraisement, inventory.

[Decision: ship and cargo restored, paying salvage, 26 February 1691].
