Captured ship: Pietas of Stockholm (master Laurence Dysk otherwise Duts or Dutch, previously Hans Hansen), owners John Hoybrook or Heybrouk or Hoybrurk of Stockholm.

History: a Swedish merchant ship (60-70 tons) bound from Rye to La Rochelle, in ballast; seized in November 1693 in port at Rye.

Hans Hansen was the master on the previous voyage from Stockholm to La Rochelle laden with tar: at La Rochelle he was replaced by Laurence Dysk for a voyage from La Rochelle to Rye, giving passage to some 'ladies of quality'.

Bundle A, numbered A 1-A 2, mail-in-transit sent from French [possibly Huguenot] residents of Rye to family members at St Savinien:

• A 1: letter addressed to Pierre Deslis Lesne, St Savinien from J Vigneault, dated Rye, 5 November 1693, writing to his father (possible father-in-law) and brother; gives family news and mentions that his wife has been very sick, but better now;
• A 2: letter addressed to Pierre Deslis Lesne, ship master-carpenter, St Savinien from Denis Richer, dated Rye, 8 November 1693, writing to his grandfather with family news; he and his wife are well and hope they can be together again someday; when he wrote the last letter he lived in Chaton [Chatham?] but now lives in Rye.

Bundle B, numbered B 1-B 37 [B 16, B 17, B 27, B 32- B 33 are wanting], further mail-in-transit of a personal nature sent from French residents of Rye to La Rochelle, mixed with letters and documents addressed to the master of the ship, Laurence Dysk, with some to Hans Hansen:

• • B 5: letter addressed to Miss Baudouen, Saintonge, from Jacques Ransion, dated Rye, [32 sic.] October 1693, writing to his wife; he is surprised not to have heard from her in a year and a half; he earns a living doing all sorts of works;
  • B 6: letter addressed to Monsieur Senat to deliver to Jean Hain, Port des Barques, Soubize, from Suzanne Hain, dated 31 October 1693, writing to her father; she is much afflicted upon learning the death of her mother and hopes that her father is not angry about what she told him about her husband; she has not receive news from her husband but is hoping that her father might write to him; further family news about health;
  • B 7: letter addressed to Jean Tilou, Port des Barques, from Elizabeth Vignaud, dated Rye, 30 October 1693, writing to her parents; family news and hopes that they can be reunited someday;
  • B 8: letter addressed to Etienne Joussé, Port des Barques, from Etienne Joussé, dated Rye, 30 October 1693, writing to his father; assurance of his good health and that he is in Rye with his wife and his brother;
  • B 13: letter addressed to François Gajot, merchant, near the 'Cheval bland' on the high street, La Rochelle, from Peraud, dated Rye, 25 November 1693, writing to his brother; family news and assurance of his good health and that of his family’; he likes living in this place although he lost his ship and profits; instructions on where to direct letters to him;
  • B 14: letter addressed to [Mistress Ogé?], Soubize from Peraud, dated Rye, 25 November 1693, writing to his sister; family news and assurance of his good health and that of his family’; asked in previous letter to let him know family news, especially in relation to their parents; likes living in this place although he lost his boat and profits; mentions the price of wheat; no talks of peace in this country and people doubt it will happen soon;
  • B 15: letter addressed to Jan Allebert, Lupain or Port des Barques, from Elizabeth Allebert, dated Rye, 12 November 1693, writing to her parents; provides family news, her sister got married a year ago to an honest man named [Lorti de Saugont?] and they live in London; visited her aunt, uncle and cousins [in England?] and asks her parents if they could send some money to relatives; has not heard from her parents although she wrote several times, and thinks it’ is more negligence than a lack of opportunities;
  • B 20: letter addressed to Henry Nos living in [Moisse?] to give to Guillaume Renaud, merchant, living in Port des Barques or Lupain, from J Renaud, dated Rye, 1 November 1693, writing to his uncle; provides family news and his wife has been very unwell in the past seven months with little hope of recovery; wrote in his last asking for money and provides details of his financial situation;
  • B 21: letter addressed to Anthoine Guerin, passage de Lupin, from Pierre Guerin, dated Rye, 1 November 1693, writing to his brother; assurance of his good health and asking for news from him; hopes for peace;
  • B 22: letter addressed to Henry Nos, merchant, living in [Moisse?], from Pierre Guerin, dated Rye, 1 November 1693, writing to his uncle; assurance that he and his wife are well and asks him to write to cousins in Holland so they can pay back the money they owe them;
  • B 24: letter addressed to Pierre Bargeau husband of Marie Dupuy, parish of Marenne Boursefrant, from Louis Merignand (writing to his uncle and aunt) and Ester Dupuy (writing to her sister), dated Rye, 4 November 1693; Esther Dupuy givea assurance of good health and hopes it is the same for all the family and hopes they can see each other again someday; has received a letter from her husband at sea a month ago and mentions the price of wheat; Louis Merignand asks forgiveness for his poor writing and hopes for peace soon so they can be together again.
