In 2023 Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse
The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) was established by the Home Secretary in March 2015. Its purpose, as set out in its terms of reference were:
To consider the extent to which State and non-State institutions have failed in their duty of care to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation; to consider the extent to which those failings have since been addressed; to identify further action needed to address any failings identified; to consider the steps which it is necessary for State and non-State institutions to take in order to protect children from such abuse in future; and to publish a report with recommendations.
Chaired by Professor Alexis Jay, with three Panel members: Drusilla Sharpling, Ivor Frank and Malcolm Evans, the inquiry developed reports and recommendations through public hearings, a research programme and The Truth Project.
An initial interim report was published in 2018. The inquiry's modular approach, using thematic investigations in order to consider the wider issues, resulted in publication of 19 investigation reports.
IICSA's final report was published on 20 October 2022.
