Court and Date of Trial: Derby Lent Assizes, March 1843.
Crime: Robbing Joseph Buch of 26 shillings at Bakewell near Tideswell.
Initial Sentence: 15 years transportation.
Gaoler's Report: Character not known.
Outcome: Refuse.
Petitions and letters: Two petitions, one from William Birchenough on behalf of inhabitants of Macclesfield, Cheshire, and one from Mary Bayley of Tideswell, Derby, the prisoner’s wife, pleading family dependent on parish relief, previous good character, first offence and dubious character of prosecutor, the second with certificate from minister and 38 inhabitants of Biddulph, Staffordshire, and covering letter. Judge’s report upholding sentence.
Returned letter from Home Office to first petitioner stating no grounds for mitigation.
