Folios 100-101. Petition to the Duke of Newcastle from Samuel Chancellor (21) born Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire; John Down (19) born Brampton, Devon; John Hearne (21) born Munster, County Clare; Charles Collins born Munster; William Cowan (30) born Down, Ireland; Peter Croughan (22) born Roscommon, Ireland; Patrick M'donald (47) and James M'donald (37) brothers born Catherlogh [Catherlough now Carlow, County Carlow] all of whom were captured aboard different vessels (name, captains and other information given) in 1744 by the French. They explain that they entered the French service only after they were threatened, ill treated and had seen many of their fellow prisoners die; had been placed in Fitzjames's [Irish] Regiment of Horse; that about eight months ago they were put on board a transport which was taken by the Royal Navy and have ever since be confined in Maidstone jail. They are 'sensible of the errors they have committed and have the utmost abhorrence to the French King's service' and pray to be pardoned and discharged.
