Folio 87. Captain John Kelly to the Duke of Newcastle. Memorial that in 1721 as Captain of an Independent Company at Tinmouth [Tynemouth] Castle [Northumberland] he rendered valuable service to the Crown by seizing 10 Dutch trading vessels engaged in smuggling; that following this having been taken seriously ill he lost his company for which he had paid 1,000 guineas [£1,500] of which £575 was borrowed and not repaid; that after recovering he petitioned the King for redress and was awarded a warrant for £150 'a sum far short of the real expense he was at in the performance of the said service without mentioning the sufferings he underwent or the charge of a tedious and severe fit of sickness or the benefit which the Government reaps by the said service'. He prays to be provided with a pension on the Civil List or in an other manner the King sees fit. [Note this petition was read 3 May 1725 and rejected; source B.H.O.]
