Georg BRANTING alias SENATOR: Swedish. An active member of Communist front organisations in the 1930s and later, BRANTING remained openly sympathetic to the Soviet Union. In 1954 he was named by the Soviet Intelligence (KGB) defector PETROV as a Soviet contact throughout the latter's time in Sweden, 1947-1953. As a prominent Swedish politician BRANTING was said by PETROV to have provided the Russians with much information on Swedish internal politics, foreign and commercial policies. PETROV stated that BRANTING was never a recruited agent but a "useful helper
