Description

Folios 191-192: Home Popham, Captain, HMS Stirling Castle at Spithead. Returns enclosures which were contained in letter of the 5th instant and in obedience to their Lordships commands conveyed in that letter states that Sir Thomas Staines and myself when on the heights of Santander discovered an American Schooner in the offing with a frigate in chase being the Surviellante. Staines was sent to the nearest ship to make the signal for boats manned and armed, and I proceeded on board the Venerable. Staines hailed some of the ships and went out himself. Imagines that the schooner was at least two miles from the nearest point of land and more than four from the harbour of Santander but as Captain Phillimore's boats boarded the schooner and as she has been libelled in his name I directed him to make a report of all the circumstances as he was more competent to do so than anybody else. Encloses letter for Lordships information. All the guns at Santander were destroyed, all the forts blown up and the town garrisoned by British troops. Astonished that the master of the Baltimore should swear nothing material happened till the day of his capture, when he captured an English brig on his passage from America Admiralty: 18 March 1813. Send copies to Mr Hamilton.

Transmits a letter from Lieutenant Michael quarry of HMS Diadem containing astatement of the capture of the American Schooner Baltimore on 7 October 1812 off the harbour of Santander, North coast of Spain.
