VisitBritain was created on 1 April 2003 and is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Its mission is to build the value of tourism by creating world class destination brands and marketing campaigns. It is now responsible for promoting to both overseas and domestic visitors. Its creation meant that for the first time in many years a national tourist board now had direct responsibility and funds to promote England to UK residents. VisitBritain also works in partnership with the national tourist boards in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to promote an attractive image of Britain. It is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and by its tourism partners.
VisitBritain was formed by the merger of the British Tourist Authority (BTA) and the English Tourism Council. The BTA was established in 1969 under the Development of Tourism Act 1969, with the functions to promote Britain overseas as a tourist destination, generating additional tourism revenue, throughout Britain and throughout the year; to help the UK tourism trade to address export markets; and to provide advice to Government on matters affecting inbound tourism and to contribute to wider Government objectives. The BTA sought to work in partnership with the devolved administrations and the national and regional tourist boards.
