Ezekil PAPAIOANNOU alias Ezekiel, Jezekias PAPAIOANNOU, PAPPY: Cypriot. An active communist in London in the 1930s, PAPAIONNIOU went briefly to Spain with the International Brigade. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s he remained an active communist holding various offices in the Cypriot political party AKEL (The Progressive Party of Working People). During the Emergency AKEL was proscribed in Cyprus. PAPAIONNIOU was detained but while in a Nicosia hospital escaped from custody to resume communist activity internationally
