Description

Prisoner name: John Stone.

Prisoner age: 47.

Court and date of trial: Oxford Lent Assizes, March 1831.

Crime: Uttering three forged £5 Bank of England notes.

Initial sentence: Death, commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner, undersigned by Charles Sage of Witney, chemist, the prosecutor, and 29 inhabitants of Garsington, Oxford and Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

John Stone of Garsington, cordwainer, the prisoner's son, undersigned by 24 inhabitants of Garsington and Oxford, certified by Mr Hughes Hughes, late MP for Oxford, testifying that the prisoner's four children have 'turned out remarkably well'.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Unaware notes were forged; prosecution witness punished for felony; family dependent on his earnings; prosecutor recommends mercy; first offence; good conduct abroad.

Other papers: Letter from Frederick Wilkinson, assistant chaplain, New South Wales, testifying to the prisoner's good conduct.

Additional Information: Prisoner held in Oxford gaol. Transported to Sydney, New South Wales.
