Custodial history
It is not usual for registers of birth to be returned to the UK from British dependencies, and the reason why these two registers were passed to the Colonial Office at or before Mauritian independence in 1968 is no longer clear. It is believed that these registers do not duplicate records held locally in Mauritius, and they are the only surviving registers of births in Mauritius to have been returned to the UK.
