The DTE series of registered files was created in 1988 in preparation for the Central Veterinary Laboratory becoming an executive agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 1990. It continued in use after the Laboratory merged with the network of Veterinary Investigation Centres to form the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) in 1995.
