The Committee on Safety of Medicines (CSM) replaced the Committee on Safety of Drugs (CSD) (1963-1970). The Medicines Commission established the Committee on Safety of Medicines (CSM) in 1970 as a Government advisory committee under Section 4 of the Medicines Act 1968. Its purpose was to advise government health ministers (who are described in the Act as the Licensing Authority) on the quality, efficacy and safety of medicines in order to ensure that appropriate public health standards are met and maintained. It provides advice to the Licensing Authority on whether new products should be granted a marketing authorisation and it also monitored the safety of marketed medicines.
The members included pharmacists, pharmacologists, toxicologists and physicians from a wide range of disciplines working in general practice, hospitals and universities; it also includes two lay members. In 2005, CSM was replaced by the Commission on Human Medicines.
