Title
British Museum (Natural History): Central Administration: Director's Office: Numerical Registers of Incoming Letters
Date
1881-1949
Description

All letters, reports and memoranda arriving at the Museum for the Director or the Museum Secretary were registered by a clerk. A number and date were stamped on the item, and details entered into the registers which comprise this series. DF 1002/1-17 contain only the register number and the name of the sender, while DF 1002/18-28 also contain the date, address of the sender, subject of the letter and 'disposal'. Most of the items listed ended up in the Reports and Letters volumes (DF 1000) or in the Case and Policy files (DF 1004).

These registers were kept in parallel with the alphabetical volumes, DF 1003.

Series held at The Natural History Museum are catalogued more fully in its online catalogue (reference DF ADM/1002). Online descriptions of some individual records can also be viewed on Discovery, see DF 1002.
