ES 17
1924-1994
This series contains the research and laboratory reports produced by the AWRE Foulness. The subject material covers military and civil projects, such as the strengths of Atomic Reactors containment vessels, and large civil engineering projects, such as bridges. Many of the reports are concerned with laboratory experimental processes, and these have not been deposited. Records concerning the management of the site produced by the Foulness senior staff are also in this series. Records produced by the senior staff at Aldermaston about policy issues relating to Foulness will be found elsewhere in the ES series.

From 2009 Atomic Weapons Establishment
Series is accruing.
The Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in Berkshire, maintained a research outstation on Foulness Island, near Shoeburyness, in Essex. The site, which covered over 2,000 acres, was adjacent to the military test range at Potton Island and was needed to undertake hydrodynamic experiments with larger quantities of conventional explosives than were permitted at Aldermaston or Porton Down. Tests conducted at Foulness were concerned primarily with improvements in safety and the approval of new designs. The site also contained a blast tunnel that was used to simulate the effects of a nuclear explosion. The Atomic Weapons Establishment ceased to use the Foulness site in 2000.
