The series also deals with Arab/Israeli relations generally, and with UK and European Union interests in the Mediterranean, the League of Arab States (Arab League), and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

The Near East and North Africa Department was created by the merger of the previous North African Department and the Near Eastern Department in 1972. The new department continued to use the previous departments' registered file series for the remainder of 1972, but was allocated its own file series from the beginning of 1973.
