This series contains records of the Northern and General Africa Department showing the provision of UK development aid to North Africa, including the states of the Sahel and the Maghreb, along with Somalia, the Central African Republic and all Portuguese Africa. The series also covers aid matters relating to Africa as a whole, including the implications of sanctions against Rhodesia, and relations with international and regional organisations concerned with the provision of development aid in Africa.
From 2009 Department for International Development
The Northern and General Africa Department was created in 1975 when the work of the West and North Africa Department of the Ministry of Overseas Development was split. Responsibility for aid work in Portuguese Africa passed to the Eastern and Southern Africa Department, and for aid work in the Sahel states passed to the West and Central Africa Department in 1976. The Northern and General Department continued until 1979, when its work was redistributed between the Eastern and General Africa Department and the Western and Northern Africa Department.
