Folios 190-191. Anonymous intelligence report. Formerly enclosed in a letter from duke of Cumberland to duke of Newcastle, dated at Lancaster, 17 December 1745 [SP 36/77/79]. Duke of Perth passed through Kendal with a party of horse on Saturday, where they were attacked by local people. They there proceeded towards Penrith but stopped at Shap after the men of Penrith came out. On Sunday [Jacobite] horse, troops and artillery arrived in Kendal. This morning duke of Perth arrived [at Kendal] with news that there were forces at Penrith and thus an engagement could be expected between there and Kendal. The men [Jacobites] then marched out of Kendal. It is said that some French are nearby. On Friday trouble was feared in Kendal but the magistrates pacified the rebels [Jacobites]. On leaving the town stragglers plundered some houses.
