Folio 189. John Shaw, mayor of Kendall [Kendal] to duke of Cumberland. Formerly enclosed in a letter from duke of Cumberland to duke of Newcastle, dated at Lancaster, 17 December 1745 [SP 36/77/1/175]. He met duke of Cumberland's messenger near Bolton[? le Sands] and assisted him with informing the nearby inhabitants of the raising of horses, men and arms. He was at Lancaster yesterday and gave information to General Oglethorpe. On leaving Lancaster he encountered rebels [Jacobites] on the road, forcing him to stay in a village while they passed through. They are fatigued and their horses in poor condition, and are plundering for provisions. With postscript stating that after the scuffle at Kendal duke of Perth proceeded to Shap intending to go on to Penrith but retreated to Shap after the firing of the Penrith beacon.
