Description (What the record is about)
-
This series consists of subject files created by the Anthropology Sub-Department of the British Museum (Natural History) Department of Anthropology. It contains the remnants of a long series of subject files held in the Sub-Department of Anthropology, together with collected volumes of human osteological reports. The files relate mainly to accessions to the collection and to research correspondence on particular topics and with particular individuals. DF 141/1-27, DF 141/118 and DF 141/129, with the 'GL' references, were kept by F C Fraser, Head of Osteology Section in the Department of Zoology. The remainder contain the correspondence and papers of K P Oakley and Miss Rosemary Powers, of the Anthropology Section, later the Anthropology Sub-Department. These all bear an 'AL' (Anthropology Letters) reference code. DF 141/28 and DF 141/29 contain papers of K P Oakley before his appointment to the Section.
The osteological reports, DF/141/141-157, relate to identifications of human bones found in excavations carried out in Britain by archaeologists working for the Ministry of Works, with a few from elsewhere.
Series held at The Natural History Museum are catalogued more fully in its online catalogue . Online descriptions of some individual records can also be viewed on Discovery, see DF 141.
