Description

Prisoner name: John James.

Prisoner occupation: Agriculturalist and former churchwarden.

Court and date of trial: Ecclesiastical Court, St Davids, 23 November 1838.

Crime: Absenting himself from the Parish Church.

Initial sentence: [Sentence not stated]. Committed to Carmarthen Gaol for costs in the suit against him.

Annotated (Outcome): 'The Secretary of State has no power to interfere with Costs and Process [of] Ecclesiastical Courts. Inform them so.'

Petitioner(s): The Provisional Committee of the General Union for the Promotion of Religious Equality, forwarded in a letter from the Honourable Secretaries [Josiah Conder] and [J H Boykett]. 73 clergy and congregation of Protestant Dissenters of the Independent Denomination of [Abergavenny], Monmouthshire, forwarded in a letter from J Hiley Morgan. The Committee of the Congregational Union of England and Wales, Congregational Library Blomfield Street, Finsbury, forwarded in a letter from [John Markburn], Islington.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has a large family to support and his wife is seriously ill; the proceedings against the prisoner are a violation of his rights; the prisoner is a respectable farmer.

Other papers: Copy letter to [J H Boykett] from 'Pro grege lege' forwarded by [Boykett]. Copy letter from David Rees, Independent Minister, Llanelly, forwarded in a letter from Boykett. Letter from Home Office to J H Morgan, Montgomery, returned marked 'No such person in Montgomery'. Copy of Warrant, and Discharge signed by the Proctor for Ebenezer Morris, prosecutor.

Additional Information: The prisoner was from Cilagwyn, Llanelly, Carmarthenshire. The prisoner is a Protestant Dissenter and member of the Church of the Independent Denomination.
