Description

Prisoner name: William Harvey.

Prisoner age: 32 years.

Prisoner occupation: Watchman.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court, 18 December 1838.

Crime: Larceny. Feloniously receiving a small quantity of tea, the property of [W Harris], Nicholas Lane, Lombard Street, [London].

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Character not known.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil'.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner, undersigned by four local supporters, and enclosing a character reference from Major Young, 25th Regiment of Foot, dated 5 October 1837. The prisoner's wife Charlotte Harvey, 28 Great Saint Helen's, Bishopsgate, [London], undersigned by 16 supporters.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner was tried without counsel; previous good character and penitent; the prisoner was not aware he was committing a crime; the prisoner has an offer of work if released; the prisoner's family are in distress.

Additional Information: Prisoner sent to York convict hulk. The prisoner served in the 25th Regiment of Foot.
