Description

Prisoner name: John Cuff.

Prisoner age: 53 (or 55) years.

Prisoner occupation: Shopman in a gold and silversmith's shop.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court, 4 January 1838.

Crime: Stealing plate and other property from his employer Kensington Lewis, 22 Saint James Street, [London], gold and silversmith.

Initial sentence: One year's imprisonment and hard labour.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil',

Petitioner(s): Kensington Lewis, prosecutor, 12 jurymen and 48 supporters. The prisoner, undersigned by the prosecutor and 16 supporters.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner had a high character and reputation in business; the jury accompanied their verdict with a recommendation for mercy; the prisoner was a victim of circumstances which lead to him committing the crime; the prisoner is now in ill physical and mental health with a young wife and three children to support.
