Description

Prisoner name: Joseph Howard.

Prisoner age: 28 years.

Prisoner occupation: Formerly a servant.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court, 5 January 1838.

Crime: Uttering forged notes. £5 [or £10] Bank of England note.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: 'Character not known.'

Annotated (Outcome): Nil. In Van Diemens Land.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner undersigned by 42 supporters. James Lea, Police Office Lambeth Street. Two petitions from Mary Howard, the prisoner's mother. The prisoner, with character references from six people including the Superintendent of Agriculture on Norfolk Island.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner was duped by others who took advantage of his youth and his monetary situation; the prisoner did not know the notes were forged; the prisoner is from a respectable family who are in distress; the prisoner is of previous good character and would have had supporters at his trial if they had known the date; the prisoner's defence was grossly neglected by his Attorney. Excellent conduct by the prisoner on Norfolk Island where he was placed in a position of 'considerable trust'.

Additional Information: Prisoner held on Leviathan convict hulk. Prisoner sent on Mangles transport ship to Norfolk Island, 1839. The prisoner was an overseer and had a ticket of leave under Captain Maconochie on Norfolk Island.
