Description

Prisoner name: Joseph Jones.

Prisoner age: 19 years.

Prisoner occupation: Watch-finisher.

Court and date of trial: Liverpool Borough Sessions [Lancashire], February 1837.

Crime: Stealing from the person. Victim, Mr Bramwell (or Mr Bramwill).

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'In prison before'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil'.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner's mother Elizabeth Jones of McKee Street, Liverpool, undersigned by 55 supporters including the prisoner's brother John Jones, and the prisoner's former employer John Pearson. Two letters from James Grocott, Lieutenant of 113 London Road, Liverpool.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is innocent; the prisoner's Attorney did not defend him well and his witnesses were not called; the Prosecutor is not certain of the identity of the perpetrator of the crime; the prisoner is of good character but has bad connections and was intoxicated; the prisoner is young and his family feel disgraced.
