Description

Prisoner name: Joseph Gardiner (or Joseph Gardner).

Prisoner age: 14 years.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey, February (or 4 March) 1837.

Crime: Stealing in a dwelling house, £10. Victim, the prisoner's master, [J Airey], surgeon of 16 Poland Street.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: 'Convicted before'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil'. 'Bad eyes - not fit at present',

Petitioner(s): The prisoner's father William Gardner, undersigned by the prosecutor, and 16 people attesting to the good character of the petitioner. William Gardner, undersigned by the prosecutor, and 31 people attesting to the good character of the petitioner. William Gardner. Prosecutor.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner did not have time to prepare a defence due to the short time between committal and trial; the prisoner is from a respectable family who feel disgraced; the prisoner is contrite and confessed to the crime.
