Description

Prisoner name: James Screen.

Prisoner age: 42 years.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey, January (or February) 1837.

Crime: Cutting with intent.

Initial sentence: Removed to Bethlem Hospital. 'Insane'.

Gaoler's report: 'Decent and quiet'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Warrant prepared for removal to Bethlem 21 February 1837'. 'Warrant of discharge 9 September 1848'.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner's sanity has been restored, he is capable of work and would like to emigrate to New South Wales; the prisoner's wife is willing to have him home.

Other papers: List of Criminal Lunatics in the Gaol at Newgate. Medical Report from Edward Thomas Monro and Alexander Morison forwarded in letter from John Edward Johnson, Treasurer, Bethlem Hospital.
