Description

Prisoner name: alias Mary Pickering.

Prisoner age: Rhoda Dillaway, 36 years. Ann Gillett, 69 years.

Court and date of trial: Rhoda Dillaway: Hampshire Lent Assizes at Winchester, 27 February 1836. Ann Gillett: Winchester Quarter Sessions, 15 October 1838.

Crime: Rhoda Dillawa: Murder of infant child. Ann Gillett: Felony.

Initial sentence: Rhoda Dillaway: Insane. 'To be kept in custody'. Ann Gillett: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Rhoda Dillaway: 'Character good. At the time of the murder she was sent to a lunatic asylum and afterwards released, and then committed for trial for the murder. Appears at times of sound mind'.

Annotated (Outcome): Both prisoners: warrant of discharge 10 September 1841.

Petitioner(s): Rhoda Dillaway: R J W Wright, Chaplain of Winchester Gaol. Rhoda Dillaway and Ann Gillett: [Thomas Baring], Chairman of the Visiting Magistrates.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Rhoda Dillaway: The prisoner is married and of a respectable character; the prisoner fears her mental health will fail again if placed in an asylum rather than gaol; sane; prisoner behaved well in gaol; prisoner has weak health. Ann Gillett: Already served long imprisonment; prisoner behaved well in gaol; prisoner has weak health.
