The Department used the existing RE file series for the first two years of its existence, but a new STM series was opened for the department's use at the start of the next three-year file cycle in the ministry in January 1970. The series continued in use until 1981, with the STM series continuing to be used for scientific and technological research matters.

The Science, Technology and Medical Department was created in 1968 as a successor to the Science and Technology Department. The department was replaced by a new Science and Technology Department in 1978, when responsibility for medical research passed to the Health and Natural Resources Department.
