The Science and Technology Division was set up in 1967. It took over responsibility for the Atomic Energy Authority from the Public Enterprises Division, work on technology and science from the Agriculture and Trade Division, and work on civil electronics and space from the Defence Materiel Division

The Science and Technology Division also handled the civil expenditure of the Ministry of Technology and the expenditure of the Science Branch of the Department of Education and Science. In 1968 the Science and Technology Division took on responsibility for public purchasing previously dealt with by the General Expenditure Division, while the Social Service Division handed over supply work for the House of Parliament and expenditure by the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works. In 1969 the Defence Materiel Division handed over work on the profit formula and Review Board work.

The Science and Technology Division was also concerned with private credit for industry, in particular shipbuilding, computers and machine tools. It liaised with the Department for Economic Affairs and the Board of Trade on industrial matters and with the Foreign Office on international scientific and technological projects. It dealt with the newly formed Civil Service Department's supply requirement.
