OD 58/1-5 were selected for permanent preservation following an accelerated review process under the Open Government Initiative in the Overseas Development Administration identified certain subjects whose records could be released early, including these files on the work of the Health and Natural Resources Department.

The Natural Resources Research Department succeeded the predecessor Land Resources Division having responsibility for general oversight of research into the problems in exploiting, overcoming and conserving natural resources in the developing world, and particular responsibility for research by various bodies in this area funded out of the aid programme. The department was abolished in 1978, its functions being absorbed into a Health and Natural Resources Department.
