Most pieces in this series are concerned with experiments on paved runways and with the construction of runways at selected RAF stations and airfields in the United Kingdom and abroad. The first of these runways (also called all-weather runways and airfield pavements) was built in the late 1930s as a result of the introduction of heavier aircraft. By 1942 virtually every airfield built for the RAF in Britain had paved runways.
