Description

Prisoner name: Charles Cockett.

Prisoner age: 20.

Prisoner occupation: Bedstead maker.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey Sessions, February 1837.

Crime: Burglary; stealing five fowls and one silk handkerchief from a shed, the property of Mrs Mary Ann Greening of Eagle Walk, City Road, Middlesex, together with Washington Yarroll.

Initial sentence: Death, commuted to seven years transportation.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Charles Cockett senior of 12 Wilson Street, Old Street, bedstead maker, the prisoner's father, undersigned by Mary Ann Greening, the prosecutrix, Adam Greening and Thomas Balliston, the prosecutors.Mary Cocket of Wilson Street, Old Street Road, the prisoner's wife. Hugh Hughes of 15 Charles Square, curate and lecturer of St Leonard, Shoreditch.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner was drawn in by Yarroll, who has been sent to the Penitentiary; the defence was mismanaged by the prisoner's lawyer; at times the prisoner is not always right in his senses; he has a wife and infant to support.

Additional Information: Prisoner held in Newgate gaol then on board hulk at Portsmouth.
