Description

Prisoner name: George Iles (or George Eyles).

Prisoner age: 16 or 17.

Prisoner occupation: Cattle drover.

Court and date of trial: Gloucester Lent Assizes, March 1836.

Crime: Stealing nine sheep and one ewe, the property of John Britton.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Character bad.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): John Eyles and Mary Eyles, the prisoner's parents. John Britton, the prosecutor, William Britton and James Gage, jury men, and 28 inhabitants of Kingswood Hill, Siston and neighbourhood, Gloucestershire.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is young and has been misled by two Irishmen, the suspected thieves, who escaped detection, as attested by witnesses; he is of previous good character.

Other papers: Statements of prosecutor and six witnesses. Covering letters for petitions from Mary Isles, Siston Hill Turnpike Gate, Kingswood near Bristol, the prisoner's mother, and Grantley F Berkely, Berkley House, with further letter from the latter seeking an reply. Letter from George Lewton, Kingswood Hill, stating the facts of the case and asserting the prisoner's innocence. Letter from Justice Williams, the presiding judge, stating that he fully expected remission of sentence except for gaoler's endorsement of character bad. Memorandum from Clerk of Assize, Gloucester, stating that George Isles and William Ivory, both convicted of sheep stealing, were both strongly recommended to mercy by the jury. Letter from H Nuttal Tomlins, Newchurch, Bristol, requesting response to petitions.

Additional Information: Prisoner held in Gloucester gaol then ordered to Ganymede hulk.
