Description

Prisoner name: Thomas Hickey.

Prisoner age: 20 or 22.

Prisoner occupation: Servant.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey Sessions, June 1836.

Crime: Stealing from his employer, James Myers of 36 Conduit Street, Bond Street.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Not known.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil. To Penitentiary.

Petitioner(s): Three petitions from Thomas Hickey of 17 Noel Street, Berwick Street, St James's, the prisoner's father; the first undersigned by the Duke of Norfolk, a former employer, and nine inhabitants of Soho and neighbourhood, testifying to his good character; the second undersigned by 35 inhabitants; the third undersigned by 18 inhabitants.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has a good character from former employers; this is his first offence; he has offers of employment.

Other papers: Letters from John Goodwill, 89 Wardour Street, St James's, John Willey, 123 Leadenhall Street, confectioner, and Robert Daws, 17 Margaret Place, Cavendish Square, all offering to give or find prisoner employment. Statement by James Meyer, 36 Conduit Street, that the prisoner was of good character before entering his service, undersigned by James Seury, 23 Surrey Street, Strand, land steward to Duke of Norfolk, stating that he would employ him in his office.
