Description

Captured ship: De Vrouw Gertruyda of Amsterdam (master Douwe Hendriksz) formerly De Compas.

History: a Dutch ship (50 lasts, 5 men and a boy), bound from Oleron to Dunkirk, laden with brandy; taken on 11/22 March 1747 off Gravelines by the privateer Fortune (Gilbert Chain commanding), and brought into Dover.

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 6-CP 8]: attestation and claim, translation of a ship's pass;
  • [CP 9]: attestation by the cargo's owners in Amsterdam, with translation;
  • [CP 10]: allegation;
  • [CP 11-CP 13]: attestation as to papers, and two sets of abstracts and translations of the 26 ship's papers (some of these were restored).

Ship’s Papers numbered SP 1-SP 12, SP 17, SP 25; bills of lading, ship's pass, cargo manifest.

[Decision: cargo condemned, ship restored, 29 June 1747; appealed]
