Description

Captured ship: Juliana of Flushing (master and owner Andrew Bodkin, late oif Ireland, now of Flushing).

History: a Dutch merchant ship (80 tons, 8 men, one Dutch passenger, formerly the Peggy of Whitehaven, taken and sold by the French), bound from Dunkirk to Dublin, laden with French red and white wine in barrels, and bottled wine, claret, burgundy and champagne; taken on 23 February / 6 March 1747 near the Lizard by HMS Speedwell (James Gambier commanding), and brought first into Falmouth, and then into Plymouth .

  • [CP 1-CP 5]: standing interrogatories, three examinations, commissioners' affidavit;
  • [CP 12]: attestation of the master, April 1747;
  • [CP 13-CP 15]: attestation and claim of the master, May 1747;
  • [CP 16, CP 16A-CP 17]: 2 sets of attestations, affidavits and translations taken and sealed by the ruling authorities of Vlissingen [Flushing] in May 1747 and brought into court 30 June 1747;
  • [CP 18-CP 21]: 2 attestations, translations and exhibits by John McNamara of Flushing, brought into court 14 July 1747;
  • [CP 22]: allegation;
  • [CP 23-CP 24]: 2 attestations as to the cargo of wine, brought into court 3 November 1747;
  • [CP 25]: report of expences allowed (including cost of embezzlement by the captors);
  • [CP 26-CP 28]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 27 ship's papers [all these papers were restored].

[Decision: restored as a Dutch ally, 16 July 1747]
