The role of the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration was created (as the Chief Inspector of the UK Border Agency) by section 48 of the UK Borders Act 2007. The Chief Inspector is the official responsible for monitoring the work of the UK Border Agency and Border Force, and is also the name used by the staff that supports their work.
The Chief Inspector is independent of both the UK Border Agency and Border Force and the Home Office, and reports directly to the Home Secretary.
In 2012 the name of the role had been changed from Chief Inspector of the UK Border Agency, to the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration.
