Description

Prisoner name(s): Emma George [Amy George] of Redruth, Cornwall.

Prisoner age: 20.

Court and date of trial: Launceston Lent Assizes 1824.

Crime: Murder of her brother.

Annotated (Outcome): Removed to Bethlem April 1825; warrant of discharge prepared 1 August 1837.

Other papers: A note of Emma George's sentence - 'insane, continued till His Majesty's pleasure shall be known' (undated).

Thomas Charville and T Hearle Rodd, Cornwall County Magistrates stating that there has been no change in Emma George's state of mind since she was convicted; she should be removed from the gaol.

A letter from Mr Poynder of Bridewell Hospital stating they will receive Emma George.

List of Criminal Lunatics in Launceston Gaol, 23 April 1825.

Mr Justice Burrough referring to the case of Jane Baker and agreeing that Emma George was temporarily insane when she killed her brother and should be released.

A letter from E W W Pendarves stating that Emma would be better staying where she is if she cannot be transported.

A note from Mr Rowe, Surgeon to Launceston Gaol stating he has no reason to think Emma George is of unsound mind.

A note from T Hearle Rodd, visiting Magistrate asking that the County should be relieved from having to maintain George.

A letter dated 20 May 1837 from Dr Edward Thomas Monro stating she is ready to be released.

A letter dated 1 July 1837 from Mary George, mother, stating she and her brother are ready to receive and support her.
