The Directorate, part of the Quartermaster General's Department, was formed in November 1940. It was responsible for matters of policy and priority in the allocation of military labour, in particular the Pioneer Corps, to both military and civilian works.
The title was changed to the Directorate of Pioneers and Labour in 1950 and in 1964 to the Directorate of Army Pioneers and Labour.
